Feed Colostrum as Quickly as Possible After Birth

Many portions remain in the water bath for between 30 and 60 minutes before being fed. The farm may benefit from placing greater focus on feeding the colostrum as soon as the ColoQuick system indicates that the thawing process has been completed.

This herd also shows some variation in how quickly colostrum is removed from the water bath after thawing. A few portions remain in the water bath for around 30 minutes, but the vast majority are fed within 10 minutes.
High Quality
Avoid Bacterial Growth
All handling and storage of colostrum should focus on maintaining the highest possible hygienic quality. This means that colostrum should be fed to the calf as soon as possible after it has been warmed to feeding temperature in the ColoQuick water bath.
Leaving colostrum in the water bath after the thawing program has been completed is not recommended, as this will promote bacterial growth.
Bacteria can double in number in less than 20 minutes, meaning colostrum quality can deteriorate rapidly and significantly. Data from SystemLoq provides valuable insight into how quickly the farm feeds the colostrum after the ColoQuick system has indicated that it is ready.
